Authentic Colombian Street Food in Manchester, UK
Featuring the patacon sandwich and hearty colombian breakfast

Some of the best breakfasts in Greater Manchester come from small, unassuming kitchens rather than flashy city-centre brunch spots.

Tucked away on St Petersgate in Stockport, Cafe Sanjuan has been serving Colombian street food since 2021, and it has been memorably described as "a greasy spoon but make it Colombian".

The cafe is led by owner Luis Sanjuan, who comes from Barranquilla, and the smell of fresh coffee greets you at the door. It also sells its own roasted Colombian coffee by the bag.

The menu goes well beyond the usual fry-up, with arepa corn pancakes, empanadas and perico scrambled eggs.

The Colombian full breakfast brings chipotle habanero sausages, mixed beans, perico eggs, an arepa, fried plantain and fresh guacamole.

The star of the show, though, is the patacon sandwich. Instead of bread, it uses green plantain, and it comes with melted cheese, lettuce and tomato plus a choice of fillings such as ground beef or chicken, for around £10.

Asked to pick a favourite dish, Luis told the Manchester Evening News: "Picking a favourite from the menu is like picking a favourite child. I cannot do it."

Inside, the space is cosy and casual, with stencil art on the windows and a cheeky reminder that it's Colombia, 'NOT Columbia'.

It is a small, family-run spot that can get busy, so it is worth checking opening times before you go. Cafe Sanjuan is at 27 St Petersgate, Stockport, SK1 1EB.
