Advancing railway station redevelopment and town centre regeneration |

Stockport Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have launched a public consultation on early plans to redevelop Stockport railway station, which the council describes as the most significant improvements to the station in decades.
What is proposed
According to the project website, the plans include new station buildings on both sides of the railway, linked by a new footbridge between the town centre and Edgeley. The buildings and bridge access points would have lifts and stairs to improve accessibility. Emerging ideas also include safer, more direct walking and cycling routes, improved public spaces and better connections with buses and the wider Bee Network.
Place North West reports that the project is expected to cost more than £100m.
The council links the plans to the wider regeneration of the town centre by the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, which the project website says has delivered more than 1,200 homes and is working towards 8,000 new homes by 2040. That target applies to the wider regeneration programme, not the station project alone.
How to have your say
The consultation opened on 8 October. Stockport Council says it closes at 11.59pm on Thursday 19 November 2026; some earlier reports gave a 17 November closing date. Feedback can be given online at yourstockportstation.co.uk, by email to yourstockportstation@stockport.gov.uk or by phone on 0161 474 2299.
Drop-in events, with no booking needed, are planned at Stockroom, Merseyway, on 15 October (2.30pm to 6pm); at Stockport Exchange 2 on 4 November (12.30pm to 4.30pm); and at Our Lady's Catholic Primary School, Edgeley, on 9 November (4pm to 8pm).
Council leader Mark Roberts said Stockport "deserves a station that matches that confidence and momentum".
