Fergie The Lost Tapes in Manchester |
Alex Ferguson recordings and interviews from the lost tapes |

For Manchester United supporters, Fergie The Lost Tapes brings a familiar story back to Old Trafford, where its earliest promise first rang out.
In November 1986, just two weeks into his job, Sir Alex Ferguson recorded a greeting for fans before a home match against Queens Park Rangers.
He had yet to win a trophy with United, but his message set out an unmistakable ambition: to make the club Britain’s greatest.
The crowd heard it that afternoon, then the recording vanished into a collection of tapes for decades.
Its return gives that well-known ambition a voice from the moment it was made.
The greeting is among roughly 400 hours of Alex Ferguson recordings preserved by Tom Tyrrell, a local radio reporter and Old Trafford stadium announcer.
Tyrrell’s grandson gave writer Wayne Barton access to the archive while Barton was researching Ferguson’s early years in Manchester.
The material spans Ferguson’s United tenure, from 1986 to 2013, and includes conversations that reach beyond match results.
Among the finds are interviews with Sir Matt Busby and Bryan Robson, alongside recordings from Tyrrell’s wider working life.
The Alex Ferguson interviews also reveal why Tyrrell’s microphone mattered to a manager wary of how his words might appear in print.
On radio, supporters could hear Ferguson’s meaning and tone for themselves.
Turning the collection into usable audio took around 18 months, with cassettes, MiniDiscs and reel-to-reel tapes requiring careful handling.
That work has rescued more than a football curiosity.
For Manchester fans, the recordings capture an era when local radio voices were part of the rhythm of match day.
They also show a new manager speaking before success made his confidence seem inevitable.
Fergie The Lost Tapes lets supporters hear that beginning again, with the uncertainty of 1986 still in the room.
The promise sounds different when you know what followed. |
